Deemed the “heart of Hawaii”, Oahu offers some of the most unforgettable outdoor experiences. From sunrise hikes to hidden beaches, these unique things to do check every box – fun, tropical, and memorable – but won’t show up on just any must-see list. Slightly out of the way but still worth the visit, these spots are known for their natural beauty without being overly crowded.
Hike The Lanikai Pillbox Trail At Sunrise

One of Oahu’s most iconic photo spots, this brief hike leads to WWII-era pillboxes and breathtaking sunrise views over the Mokulua Islands. Be warned: while short, this hike features loose dirt and a steep uphill climb. Personally, I felt that the view was infinitely worth it!
Looking to rest your legs? Stop for coffee and smoothie bowls at The Sunrise Shack after the hike. Then, wind down your morning at Kailua Beach Park, renowned for its soft white sands and turquoise waters.

Appreciate The Historic ‘Apua Fishpond

If you’re already planning to visit Kualoa Park, the ‘Apua Fishpond is definitely worth dropping by for. It only takes a short hike to get there, and the pond itself is surrounded by lush greenery and backgrounded by a panoramic view of the Ko’olau Mountain Range. Though no longer in use for actual fishing, this centuries-old site is still an important part of Indigenous Hawaiian aquaculture.
Make this visit a day trip by checking out the other activities the park has to offer, like kayaking and guided horseback tours!

Spend the Day At Halona Beach Cove

South of Halona Blowhole Lookout and hugged by the surrounding volcanic cliffs is the secluded Halona Beach Cove. This is a perfect spot for those looking to avoid more busy beaches like Waikiki’s, and its smaller size gives off a peaceful, private vibe. Still, arrive early to prepare for crowds on sunnier days.
It’s no wonder that this is a popular filming location (Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic World, 50 First Dates, From Here to Eternity) because being here is a cinematic experience all in itself!
- Address: Located along Route 72 on the Southeastern Coast
- Hours: 24/7, but it’s best to go during daylight hours
- Price: Free
Tour The Byodo-In Temple

A neat little replica of the older Byodo-In Temple in Uji, Japan, this site maintains all the beauty and tranquility of the original. Expect koi ponds, a massive brass peace bell, and serene architectural beauty amidst dramatic mountain backdrops. Despite being a non-practicing Buddhist temple, everyone is welcome to come worship or meditate.
Schedule a tour of the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park (Byodo-In location), or take a self-guided stroll to appreciate it all at your own pace. Check here for upcoming events.
- Address: 47-200 Kahekili Hwy, Kaneohe, HI 96744
