#1: Daunt Books (Marylebone)
I’ll be honest: you’ll want to visit this spot more for its gorgeous architecture than anything else. If you’re interested in seeing genuine Edwardian-era craftsmanship, then the skylights, stained glass, and suspended oak banisters will definitely wow you. In fact, while Daunt Books itself was founded in 1990, the Marylebone location sits in a building constructed in 1912, giving it that true antiquarian feel. They sell all kinds of books you can find at your regular bookstore, but don’t shy away from visiting just for the atmosphere alone.

It’s no wonder they’ve been open for 50+ years: situated in an 18th-century building with books lining the vibrant green bow-windows, Foster Books is dedicated to preservation and history. This independent bookstore specializes in rare and out-of-print books, fine bindings, and antique editions. Small but packed to the brim with variety, it’s hard not to be intimidated by these towering bookshelves!
While it’s certainly a worthy visit for anyone, I’d say that this shop would speak most tenderly to the hearts of literary history enthusiasts.

The historical street market on Portobello Road offers vintage finds and a cultural experience unique to London. Portobello Rare Books on Stall #40 is no exception, with their extensive collection of Victorian classics, “Golden Age” children’s books, and rare first editions.
