One thing I love about London is its appreciation for literature and book collecting, which is clearly shown through the sheer amount of bookshops around the city. That’s why I knew that visiting these spots in London was a must-do – and besides, how could the bookworm in me resist? Whether independent, secondhand, or part of a chain, seemingly every bookshop has its own unique flair that makes it stand out from the rest. Here are 6 charming bookstores in London to add to your list of things to do.
#1: Daunt Books (Marylebone)

I’ll be honest: you’ll want to visit this spot more for its gorgeous architecture than anything else. If you’re interested in seeing genuine Edwardian-era craftsmanship, then the skylights, stained glass, and suspended oak banisters will definitely wow you. In fact, while Daunt Books itself was founded in 1990, the Marylebone location sits in a building constructed in 1912, giving it that true antiquarian feel. They sell all kinds of books you can find at your regular bookstore, but don’t shy away from visiting just for the atmosphere alone.
- Address: 84 Marylebone High St, London W1U 4QW, United Kingdom
- Hours:
- MON – SAT 9 AM – 7:30 PM
- SUN 11 AM – 6 PM
#2: Travellers’ Tales (Marylebone)
Though it looks like more of a reading nook than a shop, I assure you, Travellers’ Tales is an unassuming (but still wonderful) little bookstore in the Marylebone area. Their shelves hold specially curated travel-themed books ranging from guides to fiction, so there’s something here for every adventurer. Interestingly enough, they also double as a travel agency!
- Address: 87 Wimpole St, London W1G 9RL, United Kingdom
- Hours:
- TUE – SAT 10 AM – 6 PM
- CLOSED SUN & MON

#3: Maison Assouline (Piccadilly)

Founded in Paris, this concept bookstore offers a luxury literary experience like no other. You can expect two floors of rare first edition books, vintage artwork, and elegant collectables, all topped off with a sophisticated, academic vibe. This really isn’t your average bookstore – I would recommend this spot to anyone looking for more than just casual browsing.
Stop at the Swans Bar (yes, inside the store!) for a cocktail and quick bite.
- Address: 196A Piccadilly, London W1J 9EY, United Kingdom
- Hours:
- MON – WED 10:30 AM – 7 PM
- THUR – SAT 10:30 AM – 9 PM
- SUN 12 PM – 6 PM
#4: Foster Books (Chiswick)
This might be one of my favorite bookstores in London. It’s no wonder they’ve been open for 50+ years: situated in an 18th-century building with books lining the vibrant green bow-windows, Foster Books is dedicated to preservation and history. This independent bookstore specializes in rare and out-of-print books, fine bindings, and antique editions. Small but packed to the brim with variety, it’s hard not to be intimidated by these towering bookshelves!
While it’s certainly a worthy visit for anyone, I’d say that this shop would speak most tenderly to the hearts of literary history enthusiasts.
- Address: 183 Chiswick High Rd., Chiswick, London W4 2DR, United Kingdom
- Hours:
- MON – SAT 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM
- SUN 11 AM – 5 PM

#5: Portobello Rare Books (Notting Hill)

The historical street market on Portobello Road offers vintage finds and a cultural experience unique to London. Portobello Rare Books on Stall #40 is no exception, with their extensive collection of Victorian classics, “Golden Age” children’s books, and rare first editions. If you’re already planning to visit the market, I recommend stopping by this shop to appreciate the books on display. Check their website to keep up with their recent additions!
- Address: Portobello Rare Books Trades on Stall 40, Portobello Road, London
- Hours:
- SAT 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
- FRI April – December 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
#6: The Gilded Acorn (Holborn)

What I liked about this shop specifically is that it really cultivates community. They offer in-store events (which you can find on their Instagram), suggest reading lists, and spotlight books from different regions of the world each month. The shop is small but well-stocked, with an emphasis on non-fiction and contemporary reads. For the modern reader seeking a like-minded literary crowd, The Gilded Acorn is the place to be.
- Address: 1 Portsmouth Street, London WC2A 2ES
- Hours: Daily 10:30 AM – 6 PM
