There’s a new series over here on P&P – and I’m calling it the Highway 1 Chronicles. Highway 1 (for those that don’t know) stretches up and down the California coast, starting at around Mendocino and ends in Orange County. Along this coast line there are SO MANY things to see & do. This series will give you a glimpse into some of those stops. First up? The B. Bryan Preserve in Point Arena, CA.
What is the B. Bryan Preserve?
The preserve’s mission statement is: “committed to the breeding and preservation of African hoof Stock.” They house different species of giraffes, zebras, and antelopes (some more endangered than others). The preserve is open to the public for tours and other unique activities.
Visiting the Preserve
The Preserve is right off highway 1 in Point Arena. Pro Tip: Couple it with a visit to Point Arena Lighthouse & Bowling Ball Beach. Even though it was absolutely *pouring* (they give tours rain or shine), we still made the most out of it – our guide gave us a detailed lecture on the animals, and we got to feed the giraffes, and check out the zebras walking around the property.
Activities
- Tours: Reservation only and there are various options, which you can find here. Warning: there are no drop-in visits, so plan your roadtrip accordingly!
- Stay: The preserve also has a select few rooms. You can read more about it here.
- Giraffe Painting Tours: You can have giraffes “paint” with you, which if you ask me is a pretty unique experience! Painting events are held on the first Saturday of every month and cost $100 per person. You can read more about it here.
G’s Review:
Would I recommend visiting the Preserve? 100% yes. It was educational and it was impressive to get right up close to the giraffes. This is something that adults AND children can enjoy. Would I drive the 4 hours from San Jose just for this? Maybe not, but I would make it a stop on my weekend agenda going north.
